Overall I am fairly happy with my final Boat pictures. Many of the textures are cartoonish although it is hard to get a realistic boat texture as it has a less complex feel to it with flat sides and solid colors. My favorite part of the lighting was the moonshine on the water, the rest seemed kind of bland although it did give just enough light to see everything but not too much to elude that it was day. I feel like I spent a lot of time on modeling the hull and boat shapes, ultimately due to my lack of experience they were not stellar but overall they conveyed the idea. I wish I had a little more time to fix up some lighting, texture and add a little more detail. As for complexity I knew I had gone for a little too much in modeling an existing boat, but I feel like my simplified version was not as bad as expected given my modeling abilities.

Wed, 16 Jan 2013 05:17:00 -0800 Lighting and Mood http://maya-3-d-animation.posterous.com/lighting-and-mood http://maya-3-d-animation.posterous.com/lighting-and-mood

Originally I had intended for my boat to be placed in the middle of the ocean in broad daylight. I had lighting set up, and the shaders I used had some lighting with them. Although I wanted more and only had a few shadows on the boat and I wanted something a little more, also thinking it would be good to create more complex lighting. After fiddling around with adding rays of the sun and lights on the boat, I ended up deleting a lot of my lighting for various reasons. Although this then created a different effect, I had a nightime scene going with dark water and it created a more surreal effect that I liked. I added some more lights to reflect off the water and make the scene more interesting. At this point I had to stop due to time constraints, so I did not have great lighting but I had something that could make a somewhat interesting scene and meet requirements, so I could move on to taking pictures.

Fri, 11 Jan 2013 06:58:55 -0800 Progress of Still Life Animation http://maya-3-d-animation.posterous.com/progress-of-still-life-animation http://maya-3-d-animation.posterous.com/progress-of-still-life-animation

Progress has been slow on the boat due to its complexity. Just getting the shape of the hull right was a difficult task to accomplish. Although completing this gets the general idea of the boat across. To make an exact model of the boat I had in my mind would not be possible with the remaining time, therefore I had to cut out a lot of the minor details, and make some of the bigger things like the chairs very simple.  Once those were put in, the rough Idea was down and that seemed like the end of modeling due to time constraints. The best thing I did to increase the believability was changing the general dimensions of the boat. Once I made everything bigger and stretch out the length, everything looked better.

For my still life animation I am going to do a small motor boat. I originally was going to do a traditional room, but for my last project I wanted to do something more ambitious. I opted for a boat because I am a huge fan of the water. I wanted to a sail boat, and possibly attempt an America's cup boat, but decided that would be way too complex so I chose a smaller motor boat (Thanks to George Pisano for the model idea). This model still had some windows and chairs like a traditional room, but will still have the boat modeling too. I will also add a nice blue sea and a beautiful sky to complete the effect.

Bears_picture

I think that overall my animation was solid and my figures conveyed what they needed to. My pitfall was that I picked complex realistic characters in bears so I can't replicate all the intricate details that truly give the bear its character. I could tell the base of my story except for a few sounds that got left out due to various reasons. Although based on the critique my intentions for the story were not gotten across as it was widely misinterpreted although that may have been due to some sounds that had then not been added. I may not have made the best. Hooves when thinking about ease of making while still getting across a message but I think I had a decent looking figures in a simple environment, which was not a big part of the story although with time. Of have played a bigger role as I would have liked.

Tue, 16 Oct 2012 13:44:00 -0700 Reflection on Emotion Animation http://maya-3-d-animation.posterous.com/reflection-on-emotion-animation http://maya-3-d-animation.posterous.com/reflection-on-emotion-animation

Over the course of this animation I have encountered many problems and many successes. I have had many times where Maya has not done what I wanted it to do and spent much time dealing with that fact. Also many other technical problems with movie maker and what not, and I have rendered the animation incorrectly a few times. All in all these have taken up a lot of time, so in the future I will work harder to prevent these or budgeted more time for these errors, whether they be technical or on my part. In general I feel like I had a solid idea and my animation conveyed the base of it, but there were still some major things that I could have done to greatly improve my animation. Ultimately my flaw was that I picked up a concept that required lots of events and a lot of technical skills that needed to be executed very well. There are simpler concepts that would still be just as powerful that I probably should have tried to do. Rather I got stuck with this one idea that I really liked, and didn't want to give it up and spend the effort on coming up with something different. The total quality was alright, also  color did not get a lot of time so it is pretty simple. The basic idea is there but I need to work on controlling my ideas and getting something down in time rather than spending too much time on the wrong things.

Wed, 10 Oct 2012 18:10:00 -0700 Purpose and Progress of Emotion Animation http://maya-3-d-animation.posterous.com/purpose-and-progress-of-emotion-animation http://maya-3-d-animation.posterous.com/purpose-and-progress-of-emotion-animation

The purpose of my animation is to instill a sense of awe in the viewer. I am trying to achieve this by starting with a small shape, then slowly introducing bigger and bigger shapes. Diamonds become squares, which become bigger squares which eventually become one big pyramid shape. It is supposed to be amazing that such a big thing is composed of such tiny things. This monstrosity is made out of thousands of tiny little smaller shapes. Progress has beens slow due to the many copies that need to be made and each one needs to be animated slightly differently. It is also hard to achieve a lot of the exact ideas I hade in mind so it takes more time to find a work around that but still conveys the idea.

Thu, 06 Sep 2012 09:32:00 -0700 Color Balance Analysis http://maya-3-d-animation.posterous.com/color-balance-analysis http://maya-3-d-animation.posterous.com/color-balance-analysis

The shapes to the far right and left of the painting are a bluish purpleish color and the shapes circling around the big yellow ones in the middle are green. The red is once again the smallest part having only the one shape in the right hand corner and the small stripe farther into that corner. There is also a large shape that towards the top left which has a hint of red, but it is not quite as strong a red so it does not make the red too overpowering. The blue dominates a lot of the painting along with the yellow which as a substitute for green helps make that color a huge part of the painting. Although the red is small and in the corner, since it is so bright you still know that it is there and adds its element to the painting. The overall feel of the piece is a confused, cluttered atmosphere. This is created by the various different shapes, the equal use of colors and sizes makes it so there is no focal point. The objects are also just shapes, rather than a real object we don't think of it as a scene but random shapes. These shapes are also not connected so, they don't form to make one image, but many images in one scene. Source of Painting: KeithGarrow.com
